James Richard Alford, of Pearl, died Monday, August 27, 2007, at home after a brief illness. Graveside services will be 10 am Wednesday, at Lakewood Memorial Park in Jackson. Visitation will be 6 pm until 8 pm Tuesday at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon.
Mr. Alford was born in Jackson on November 30, 1930 to William Charles Alford, Sr. and Lena Bailey Alford. Mr. Alford attended school at Central High School in Jackson. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January of 1948. He proudly served aboard the U.S. Vega-AF59, where he was a plankowner. He served in Korea and continued serving in the Naval Reserve until he retired after a combined service of 35 years. He worked for Frito-Lay for 21 years and retired in 1985.
Mr. Alford was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Dorothy Jean Alford and a brother, William Charles "Buster" Alford, Jr. and his beloved dog, "Skipper".
He is survived by his loving wife, of 52 years, Beatrice Wolverton Alford; daughter, Polly Hughes and son-in-law, David of Richland; daughter, Nancy Alford of Pearl; grandson, Michael (Misty) of Pearl, granddaughter, Denise Hughes of Pearl; brother, Thomas (Peggy) Alford of Satsuma, AL and one sister, Barbara (Bill) Barron of Pace, FL. He also leaves behind three great grandchildren, Hunter, Summer and Baylee, that and they were the sunshine of his life.
The family would like to thank Dr. LeGarde, the staff of 6th floor Baptist Medical Center, 5 South at St. Dominic's Hospital and the wonderful staff of Odyssey Hospice for their care and support.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Alford, Rick Echols, Jimmy Broome, Ben Hardy, David Hughes and Michael Hughes.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to: Wellsfest at Wells Church, 2019 Bailey Ave., Jackson, MS 39213.
He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbors.

Beatrice “Bea” Alford passed from this life into Heaven on October 21, 2015. She was born on July 11, 1930 to L. C. and Polly Wolverton in Damascus, Mississippi and grew up in the Demascus-Sebastapol area. She attended school there and later moved to Jackson where she married James Richard Alford. They were married over 50 years when he preceded her in death in 2007. She was also preceded in death by both parents.
She attended cosmetology school at Fritz-Marinello in Jackson in the 1950’s and was a cosmetologist and an instructor at Jackson Academy, Cox Beauty School and in Carthage, Mississippi for many years. She later worked for Deposit Guaranty Parking Garage in downtown Jackson.
She is survived by her daughters, Polly Hughes (her rock) and Nancy Alford (the worry-wart) and her favorite son-in-law, David Ray Hughes as well as one sister, Alice Holley of Clinton and several nieces and nephews. No one could have asked for a better son-in-law. She also leaves two grandchildren, Michael and Denise Hughes, granddaughter-in-law, Misty Hughes, mother of her beautiful great-granddaughters, Summer and Baylee, whom she loved dearly and one great-grandson, Hunter Sims.
Bea attended Wells Memorial Methodist Church for the past few years and loved every minute of it and her wonderful pastor, Keith Tonkel, and the loving congregation. WellsFest was one of her favorite things each year.
Bea always said just what was on her mind, no matter who was around and whether they liked it or not.
She will be deeply missed and loved forever.
Visitation will be Thursday, October 22, 2015 from 6 – 8 pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS.
Graveside Services will be held at 11 am Friday, October 23, 2015 at Lakewood Memorial Park in Jackson, MS.
Memorials may be made to Wells Memorial Methodist Church, 2019 Bailey Ave., Jackson, MS 39213.
