John served in the Civil War as 1st Sergeant, Battery G, 1st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry from December 17, 1861 until discharged for promotion, Aug. 15, 1862 when, on the same date, he was commissioned into the 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, as Adjutant. He resigned his commission, October 1, 1864.

His name is on Panel #13 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio for service in the 103rd Regiment.

Wife: Margaret. Children: Benjamin F., Mary A., Fannie, 6. He worked as a liveryman, a traveling salesman, and in the office of the Standard Oil Company.

At his death from heart failure he resided at the Lennox.
