USN WW II

He was southern born and joined the Navy as a young man. He was in the Navy during WW2 and loved this country. He shared some war stories but was much more than a military man. He was what was later called a diesel submariner, and served with distinction. It was with much admiration I observed him in later years pulling himself out of his wheelchair to stand as fellow veterans marched by in local parades.

He always said he was never complete until he had a family and he was family oriented. He retired after 22 years of service as his daughters were just beginning school. His civilian life included employment at the US Postal Service. He was a supervisor at New London and later Postmaster at Plainfield.

He was steadfast and never complained about any sacrifice he made for his family. He was intelligent and a hardworker, and his biggest gift was how he taught, by example, the true meaning of values, respect, and love. His word was his bond, and a handshake was his signature. He adored his wife and although he corrected his children about poor choices he loved them unconditionally.

I'm glad I had the chance to become his friend.

She was the second of twins born at home in Center Groton. The home was purchased when her mom Ruth was married to her first husband Sammy Whipple.

Lucille married twice, both husbands preceding her in death, as well as her only son. "Baby Boy" Voegtlin was buried in New Mexico.

Three children were born in quick succession and when asked how she didn't go crazy with babies so close in age, said simply she didn't have time.

She ran on emotion and was spontaneous with hugs and kisses. She loved scooping up her children, and then their children when they were born, into the rocking chair for endless cuddling and entertainment. Her bedtime stories were always made up and every outing included a guitar and singing.

There was no shortage of kisses and "I love you" s. Her heart was always on her sleeve.
