Edythe M. Smith, 93, of Quakertown, Pa. has started a new life in Heaven. She peacefully passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at Independence Court of Quakertown with her daughter by her side. She was a wonderful wife, mother, Oma and great Oma.
Born on July 23, 1925 in Upper Black Eddy, she was the daughter of the late John E. and Margaret (Culberson) Whitman. Fred, her beloved husband of 62 years, went to be with the Lord in 2010. She is survived by: her daughter Brenda K. Fox and husband Todd of Quakertown, Pa., and her son Roger F Smith and wife Carol of Upper Black Eddy, Pa; grandchildren Craig Overpeck and wife Heidi of Blue Bell, Pa., Karen Yodis of Sinking Spring, Pa., Kami Wagner and husband Rob of Newtown, Pa. and Megan Smith of North Wales, Pa. Edythe cherished her great grandchildren Chase, John, Aidan, Brendan, Miao, Daisy, and Cora.
She is survived by one brother, Harry Whitman of Milford, NJ., and sisters in law Grace Whitman of Hudson, Mass., and Gladys Piell of Wellsboro, Pa.
Brothers and sisters preceding her in death were Raymond, Fred, E. Dorothy, Elsie, Ethel, J. Edward, I. Kenneth, and Jay.
Edythe left school in the 8th grade to help support her family during World War II, working in the lab of Riegel Paper Corporation of Milford NJ. When her children were in 1st and 4th grades, she became Cafeteria Manager at the new Bridgeton Elementary School in Upper Black Eddy where many students still say that she made the BEST chocolate cake. After the school was permanently closed, she worked until retirement as a part time Postal Clerk in the Upper Black Eddy Post Office where Fred was the mailman. Edythe was a member of Upper Tinicum Lutheran Church in her younger years and most recently the United Church of Christ in Milford NJ. She was a member of Milford Senior Citizens where she enjoyed planning trips and outings. She was a member of the Red Hill Seniors and Upper Bucks Seniors.
Edythe and Fred were avid campers throughout every state in the continental USA, making many friends along the way. She had many wonderful stories of their adventures together, particularly multiple trips across Canada to Alaska. Her favorite time was spent with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing Bingo, and listening to country music. The residents of Independence Court became her extended family members.
Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Naugle Funeral & Cremation Service, 135 W. Pumping Station Rd., Quakertown, with a visitation preceding from 9:00 AM until the time of services. Family and friends are invited to join us to celebrate Oma’s wonderful life. Interment will be privately held at Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
