Joseph was the son of Hervey C. Scudder Sr. and Carrie Maud Dilatush. He married Elizabeth Wilson.

The following obituary appeared in The Times, Trenton, NJ, Thurs., 28 June 2001:

EWING - Joseph Broadhurst Scudder, owner of Scudder Tractor Co. in Pennington, died Tuesday at home. He was 97.

A lifelong Ewing resident, he took over management of the company after his brother, Hervey, died in World War II.

He was the last of 12 generations to own Broadhurst, the family farm on Sullivan Way, where New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Co. now stands. The farm was passed down through the Broadhurst family to Eliza Anderson, who married Mr. Scudder 's grandfather, Uriel Titus Scudder. In the early 1900s, his mother, the late Carrie Maud Dilatush Scudder , began Oakland Dairy, a milk business she purchased from the Roebling family, which he later managed until the 1960s. Mr. Scudder was the son of the late Hervey Clark Scudder Sr., a member of the Mercer County Bar Association. Mr. Scudder also owned the Harbor View Inn, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

Mr. Scudder attended Trenton Junction School, The Fisk School and Trenton Central High School. He graduated from Stanford University in 1926 and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

He had been national director and vice president of the New Jersey Farm Implement Dealers Association and a member of the Wings Club in New York and Stanford Alumnae Association.

Husband of the late Elizabeth Wilson Scudder , he is survived by two nephews, Hervey Clark Scudder III of Vermont and Charles Maddock Scudder of Florida; and 14 grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Wilson-Apple Funeral Home, Pennington Circle, Hopewell Township.

Burial will be in Ewing Cemetery.
