John Unger Jr., 89, of Terre Haute, passed away at 1 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, in his residence. He was born in Vigo County, on Oct. 5, 1923, to John Patrick Unger and Alice Cottom Unger. He was an Army Air Corp veteran of World War II, and was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Marcella June Rost Unger, who passed away in August of 2011.

He is survived by one son, David Unger and wife Sondra; one daughter, Linda England and husband Scott; five grandchildren, Lindsey Unger, Carlee Unger, Austin England, Blake England, and Lauren England; a brother-in-law, Neils Heramb; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by one brother, William C. Unger; and one sister, Louise Jones.

He was a member of the R.E.M.C. Board for more than 25 years, Vigo County Fair Board, Vigo County Farm Bureau Co-Op, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972, and attended both Blackhawk Community Church and Oak Hill Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Revs. Jeff Lee and Tim Fagg officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, with military honors provided by VFW Post 972. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, in his memory. Marcella June Unger, 84, of Riley died on August 10, 2011 in the Terre Haute Regional Hospital emergency room as a result of injuries incurred in an automobile accident earlier on that day. She was born on November 29, 1926 to Albert and Laura Jeffers Rost. She was a homemaker her entire life and had also been employed at the former War Aid Depot (Tumpane) during WW2, Simplicity Pattern, and most recently at the Field of Flowers Greenhouses. She was currently attending the Blackhawk Community Church, had a long association with Oak Hill Community Church, but since her childhood her membership was at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. She is survived her husband of 61 years, John Unger, Jr., a daughter Linda England and her husband Scott, a son David Unger and his wife Sondra, five grandchildren Lindsey Unger, Carlee Unger, Austin England, Blake England, and Lauren England, and many nieces and nephews. Her sisters Eva Heramb and Alberta Hunter have preceded her in death. Funeral services will be at DeBaun Springhill Chapel 1 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Jeff Lee officiating. Calling will be on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice.
