Lena Irene (Shoemaker) Rickabaugh, oldest daughter of Jess and Olga Caroline Lundberg Shoemaker, was born on September 5, 1905, on the family farm near Solomon in Fremont County, Iowa. Sixteen months later the family circle was completed with the arrival of her beloved little brother, James Vernon. The two children had a happy childhood of outdoor games especially ice skating, in the winter, and both had a great love of learning, fostered by their mother. Families in their neighborhood worked and played together and Lena and James soon became expert dancers at house dances where their father was the caller for square dancing. Her grandmother, Dilia lived with the Shoemakers and was an important influence on her life. Lena was Valedictorian of the Bartlett High School Class of 1925 and until this last year one of her proudest joys was returning for the annual school reunion. She was oldest living graduate of Bartlett High School.
Lena and Elmer Rickabaugh were married January 19, 1927 at the LDS parsonage near Bartlett by the Rev. H. N. Pierce, a union which lasted for 63 years until Elmers's death in 1990. They began their life together in Bartlett where Lena was baptized on February 15, 1931 by the Rev. G. W. Kitchen. She maintained lifelong ties with the Bartlett Christian Church and served it for many years as a Sunday School teacher and as President of the Ladies Aid society.
During her long life, Lena was a professional seamstress and also a nanny, helping raise several families of children who were very dear to her. In their twilight years Elmer and Lena became part of the small friendly community of Barada, Nebraska, and Lena cherished a lovely garden in this rural setting she so loved. Three years ago in failing health, she was forced to enter the hospital in Falls City. Then in June of 1999 she moved to the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, Iowa, to be nearer to family members. She passed away on Saturday, January 8, 2000, after a three day illness, at the Harvard County Hospital in Cresco, at the age of 94. She had kept as active as possible until the end, and had been at her niece Donna's home just a few days before to celebrate Christmas, in Lime Springs.
Lena was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother. She is survived by her niece Donna and there husband Clarence Ihns, by Elmer's nephew James Rickabaugh and his wife Frances of Tabor, Iowa, by one sister-n-law, Marie Rickabaugh, also of Tabor, by several great nieces and nephews and their families, cousins, and many loving friends.
Services for Lena were held at the Dorr Funeral Chapel in Falls City, Nebraska, on Tuesday, January 11, 2000, with Dr. Donna Ihns leading the service. Burial is in the cemetery at Barada, close to the home and neighbors who meant so much to her. A memorial service will be held a later at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco. The poet Dorothy Frances Gurney must have had someone like Aunt Lena in mind when she wrote, "One is nearer God's Heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth."
The family requests that any memorials be given to the cemetery in Barada. Bearers were Elmer Duerfeldt, Dale Duerfeldt, Robert Davis, Danny Inglis, Dean Palmer, and Jerry Howard. Honorary bearers were James Wesseling, Andrew Wesseling, Calvin Wesseling, Thomas Miller, Kevin Roseboom, Nicholas Wesseling, C. J. Wesseling, Daniel Miller, and Jack Roseboom.
