Robert S. Wolverton
Former rural mail carrier in Danville area
Robert S. Wolverton, 91, formerly of 410 Bloom St., Danville, and a guest at Grandview Health Homes, Inc., Danville, passed away Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born Feb. 4, 1920, in Danville, the son of the late Robert Boyd and Flora E. Kashner Wolverton.
He graduated from Danville High School in 1938. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He also served for many years with the United States Army National Guard, including during the Korean War.
Mr. Wolverton was employed by the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier in the Danville area.
He was a member of Shiloh United Church of Christ. Other memberships included the Danville American Legion, Danville Moose and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, where he served on the Cemetery Board.
In his younger years, Mr. Wolverton was very active in the Masonic organization. He was a 50-year member of the Danville-Mahoning Lodge 224 F&AM, Danville, where he served as master in 1956. He also served as the District Deputy Grand Master of the 35th Masonic district. He was a member of the Danville Royal Arch Chapter 239, where he served as past high priest, Calvary Commandery 37 of Danville, where he served as past commander and the Vallerchamp Council 25 Royal and Select Master Masons, Sunbury, where he served as past illustrious master. He was also a member of the Pen Priory 6 of the Knights of the York Cross of Honor. Mr. Wolverton was a member of the Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg. Other memberships included member the Red Cross of Constantine, Shamokin, and the Sunbury Shrine Club.
He enjoyed woodworking and especially enjoyed carving duck decoys and carousel horses.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Emma E. Pritchard Wolverton, on May 21, 2009. They were married July 31, 1940.
He is survived by one daughter: Judy I. Stuck of O'Fallon, Mo. He is also survived by two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Paul R. Wolverton, of Danville, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Edna VanHorn, in 2001, and Mary Krum, in 2010.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Robert's life, which will be held on Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at noon at Shiloh United Church of Christ, 500 Bloom Road, Danville, with the Rev. Mary B. Schmotzer officiating. Burial will be private in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Danville Mahoning Lodge 224 F&AM will conduct memorial Masonic services at 11:30 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Montour Unit, 1948 Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701-3945.
