Birth: May 23, 1842
Death: Jul. 8, 1895

From the Saline, Michigan Observer, Thursday, July 18, 1895, under the section for news from around the state of Michigan:

Frightful Matricide in Ottawa County:
Mrs. Levi Pierce, aged 60, who lived with her husband near Berlin, Ottawa county, was foully murdered and her daughter, May Pierce, aged 13 and her grandson, George Cheesbro, aged 16, are now in jail awaiting examination. Mr. Pierce was at work in a neighboring field when May ran to him crying that her mother was dead. Pierce with a neighbor went to the house and on the floor beside the kitchen stove found was (sic) Mrs. Pierce’s dead body. The chin was horribly gashed, the teeth were knocked out, and the neck was black and bruised, as if she had been choked to death. There were evidences of a terrible struggle. The floor had been scrubbed to remove the trace of the crime. LATER: Cheesboro (sic) has confessed to having killed Mrs. Pierce to avenge the treatment given May by her mother. He said that she was whipping the child severely and he interfered by hitting her on the side of the head with a poker. He expresses little regret for the deed. Strange to say, the husband of the murdered woman shows little remorse. His wife ruled the family with an iron hand, and had often belabored her husband with a club. Cheesbro and the girl have both been bound over for trial.
