The Philadelphia Inquirer; Monday, March 15, 1880:
"DEATH OF A DESCENDANT OF EARLY SETTLERS
During the fire of yesterday morning at Aldridge's Mill, Germantown, Washington Pretorius, Esq, in the immediate rear of whose residence, at Germantown and Pastorius street, the building was located, the property having been sold to him by Mr. John B. Turner, rose hastily, and dressing himself went out to render any assistance in his power and watch over the safety of his own house. After remaining for some time at the scene of the disaster, Mr. Pastorius returned home and went back to bed. He had, however, scarcely reached a reclining position when, without any premonition, he fell dead, it is presumed of heart disease, brought on by the excitement consequent upon the conflagration. The deceased was formerly in the dry goods business on Eighth street, near Race. He was about sixty-five years of age, and leaves a wife and several children. He was in independent circumstances, and was "to the manor born," being a direct descendant of Francis Daniel Pastorius, who was one of the original settlers in the district originally known as German township, afterward called Germantown. The records of the township show that this township was laid out by virtue of three warrants as follows: Eighth month, October 12, 1683, for 6000 acres to Francis Daniel Pastorius, for the German and Dutch purchasers; twelfth month, February 13, 1683-81, to Francis Daniel Pastorius for 200 acres; second month, April 25, 1684, to Jurian Hartsfelder, for 150 acres. The township was divided into settlements called Germantown, Cresheim (since called Mount Airy), Sommerhausen (since called Chestnut Hill) and Crefelt. The laying out of Germantown was commenced by Pastorius, October 21, 1685, and on August 12, 1680, William Penn, at London, signed a charter constituting a corporation, of which Francis Daniel Pastorius was the chief bailiff. This court went into operation in 1690, and continued its sessions for sixteen years. The family has since continuously resided on some portion of the original estate."
