HASTINGS - Lilah Leola Owen Read, 95, of Oconto died Saturday, April 18, 2009, in Hastings.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. May 8 at the Oconto Community Center.
Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.

She was born Jan. 31, 1914, in Hastings to Fred and Agnes (Kirk) Owen.

On June 15, 1938, she married Roy Read. He died in 1980.

Survivors include her daughter, Sherry Shrestha and her husband, Prakash, of Hazelton, British Columbia, Canada; son, Dennis Read and his wife, Pat, of Oconto; sister, Marjorie Scott; sister-in-law, Eunice Owen; grandchildren, Amy Ashbrook, Joshua Read, Shanti Shrestha, Christy Shrestha and Jenny Shrestha; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Her mother had gone to Hastings to deliver her even though the family was living near Stapleton on a homestead. Her grandfather was the administrator at one of the hospitals in Hastings at the time.

They settled in the Oconto area when she was about 7 years old.

She went to the Tuckerville school until the 11th grade, then transferred to Oconto and graduated with the class of 1931. She took a two-year teaching program at Union College in Lincoln and was certified as a teacher in 1933.

After her daughter Sherry was born, Lilah stayed at home but went back to teaching when Sherry was ready to start school. She started teaching at Oconto Public School in 1955. In 1959, she and Roy adopted a little 4-year-old boy named Dennis.

After many years of teaching, she went back to school and received a bachelor's degree in teaching from Kearney State College in 1967. She enjoyed teaching and had many good memories of her students, who were like family to her.

She retired from teaching in 1979. She and Roy tried wintering in Arkansas but didn't really care to be away from home. She lost her beloved companion of many years in 1980 and never remarried.

She became a world traveler from Mexico to Alaska, Europe, Singapore, Nepal, India, Russia and Africa. Always one to keep up with the current events and new technology, she purchased a computer and taught herself to use it when she was 86 years old.

Age began to creep up on her, and she had to modify her activities. Always a lover of horseback riding, she longed to go riding again. At age 94, she managed to go for two horseback rides with Sherry. She even went sailing on Lake Michigan the same year.

Her sense of adventure and enjoyment of life kept her young at heart even while her body aged significantly.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Velma Kranz; brother-in-law, Fred Kranz; brother, Bernard Owen and brothers-in-law, Floyd Gardiner and Henry Scott.

Memorials are suggested to the Oconto Alumni Association or the Oconto Community Center.
