=== Note ===
: Note: @N469@
: @N469@ NOTE: Blanche's wedding license lists her marriage to Jack as her second. If this is not a clerical error, no mention of a previous husband was ever recorded in family oral traditions or discussed by Blanche herself.
:: Blanche was born in Baca Co., CO, or Clark Co, KS, in about 1885. I feel Colorado is the more likely location. She was both confused and vain about her age. At her marriage to John Osborn, she gave her age as 28 (she was 31). Seven years later she was 29. Nonetheless, shewas younger than her sister Nora (born 1883) and older than her sister Bessie (born 1888). Various family records give her birth as July 5and July 31, 1885. She celebrated the latter date.
:: At the age of five, Blanche's mother died. Thereafter, she lived with her aunt, [Leanna] Ida Phipps Jones. Although Ida was a decidedlytempermental character, she loved and nurtured her niece. When JosephPhipps remarried, Ida simply ignored his requests to send his daughters [Nora was with her too] home.
:: Blanche did not she her father from 1891 until approximately 1919. However, she remained emotionally attached to her family. She knew her paternal grandfather, who lived with her at the end of his life. Until her marriage in 1917, she maintained a close relationship by letter with her sister Alice [whom she finally met in 1946 or 1947]. She developed a close bond with another sister, Lettie, after the latter visited Elsinore in the mid-1940s. This relationship continued for 30 more years byletter.
:: The Jones couple lived by homesteading drylands and then selling the property when title passed to them. When Blanche was old enough to pass for 18, she too held homesteads. These were located in the Dakotas, Montana, and possibly Minnesota.
:: As Blanche grew up, the family lived in Kansas and the above states. It was a life of hard work. I have recorded many of her stories from this era in a 1994 essay.
:: The last ranch owned by David Jones, The Golden Eagle, was prosperous and included land for which Blanche held title. At David's death in a car accident, Ida sold her share of the ranch to Jack Osborn and moved to Elsinore, California, to care for her own aged aunt, Lucinda Phipps Johnson.: Blanche and her family followed in 1921 when her son's asthma became life-threatening.
:: Blanche was slender, fair, blue-eyed and stood about 5'6". She hada lovely voice, soft and clear. She wore only dresses, never indugled in cosmetics and preferred a fairly heavy laced shoe with perhaps a two inch heel.
