Passing of Ella Nealey Summers
Wife of Grant Summers; Daughter of Matthew W. and Harriet Nealey.
Death came to Mrs. Summers, Thursday, Jan. 26, 1939.
Death came to a woman closely associated with the building up of Miles county, Thursday, when Mrs. Summers, died at the home of her son Glen, south of Malvern, Iowa. This was the home Mr. and Mrs. Summers had occupied for so many years and in which they had reared their family.
Funeral services were held Saturday in the Mansfield Funeral Home, largely attended by old friends and old neighbors. Rev. C.A. Calkins conducted the rites and music was furnished by Zelma Fletcher, who played Handel's "Largo" and the Chopin Prelude. Ross, S.S. and J.N. Summers and Allen Chantry of Omaha and C.C> Hurlbutt and Dlae Chantry of Tabor served as pallbearers.
Rev. Calkins read the following life sketch of Mrs. Summers; Ella Summers, daughter of Matthew and Harriet Nealey, was born Sept. 24, 1862 on a farm near Danville, Iowa and died Jan. 26, 1939 at the home of her son near Malvern, Iowa.
On Oct. 1, 1890, she was married to William Grant Summers at Danville, Iowa, and they made their home at a farm near White Cloud, until the following spring, they moved then to Madison county, Nebraska. There they farmed until the spring of 1896 when they returned to Mills county and built their home on the site of the town of White Cloud. In 1911 they purchased the Newton Summers farm where they lived until their retirement in 1919. After two years spent mostly in Florida, they settled in Omaha, Nebraska, where they made their home for eighteen years and where Mr. Summers passed away last July.
Mrs. Summers shared with her husband the disappointments and reward of all progressive farmers. Each season was a new experiment in methods and operations, type of seed and development of their rapidly growing herds of livestock. Though they suffered their share of reverses, no year closed without some of the satisfaction that come only with successful achievement.
Four children were born to this union; Mrs. Inez Smith, of Omaha, Glen of Malvern, Frank of Red Oak, and Duran of the Philipine Islands. To this family Mrs. Summers devoted her entire life, creating a place for her friends and relatives alike. Never enjoying good health, she faced pain and hardships with quiet fortitude and always eased her own and others burdens with her ever ready sense of humor and kindly tolerance of misfortune. The world has been made brighter by her laughter, better by her charity, more gracious by her charm. Besides her children, Mrs. Summers leaves six grandchildren, two sisters and a brother; Miss Cora Nealey, of Fort Myers, Florida, Mrs. Kate Hixon and Charles Nealey of Danville, Iowa.
