Rev. Edgar W. Miles, Church Founder, Dies at 83
Services on Monday, at Maywood Plymouth Congregational church, were for the Rev. Edgar William Miles, of 241 Home, who founded the church in 1925 a year after coming to Oak Park to live. The Rev. Truman Morrison, pastor of the church, conducted the services for its pastor emeritus. Burial following was at Forest Home cemetery.
Born in Cardiff, Wales in 1870, Edgar Miles came to this country at the age of 14 with his family. The father, Thomas Niles, was a Welsh Presbyterian minister who founded a Welsh community in Trenton, Neb. Edgar attended Lake Forest college, from where he was graduated before going on to McCormack Theological seminary at Omaha, from which he was graduated in 1896. He had married Lula Stockton, of Hopkins, Mo., in 1893. The couple had five children.
He held pastorates in Syracuse, Kan., and Dallas, Ore., before filling various pulpits in Seattle Wash., for a nine-year period following 1915. In 1924, the year following the death of his first wife, he came to reside in Oak Park. In 1925 he was married to Ethel Edmunds, with whom he has lived m the century-old home at 241 Home ever since. Her father, Abraham Edmunds, a pioneer finisher of interiors here, had been instrumental in the Miles family emigration from Wales. The men were cousins.
Mr. Miles retired from the pastorate of Plymouth Congregational church of Maywood in 1933, after having established that church and serving as minister during construction of the church edifice, in 1926. Subsequently he filled pulpits of pastors on war duty during World War II, chiefly at the Fourth Congregational church of Chicago. He was a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, which he joined many years ago in Wichita, Kan.
His death at home Saturday was after a brief illness following a second stroke. Surviving are his widow, Ethel Edmunds Miles, at home, and his five children: Alice Miles, Philip Miles, Edgar W. Miles, Jr., and Louise Miles Thompson, all of Seattle, Wash., and Arthur S. Miles, of Santa Cruz, Calif.; two brothers, Meyer Miles of Jewel City, Kan., Stanley Miles of Lincoln. Neb., and a sister, Rachel Edwards, of Lincoln.
Married Lula M. Stockton 24 February 1893--Trenton, Hitchcock, Nebraska. She died 26 Mar 1924--Medina, King, Washington, and was the daughter of Jerome Stockton and Jane Wolverston
