"Fifth oldest son George Luther Matthews enlisted at age 19 on Aug. 21, 1862 as a private in Co. A 148th NY Volunteers. He was wounded at Cold Harbor on June 3, 1864 then killed near Petersburg, Va. on April 2, 1865 and buried in the battlefield at Hatcher Ream. George Luther Matthews was born on Aug. 17, 1843, making him only age 21 at the time of his death."
