F.D. Pastorius, City Pioneer, Dies This A.M.

Prominent Business Man, Noted Horticulturist, and Resident 40 Years, Passes Away at Residence Francis Daniel Pastorius, 63, president of the Colorado Investment and Realty Company, for more than 40 years a resident of Colorado Prings and the Pikes Peak Region and an active figure in the life of the community, died at his home, 720 N Cascade Avenue, shortly after 7 o'clock this morning after an illness of several weeks. Mr Pastorius had long been identified with the real estate and investment business, the present corporation succeeding the firm of Thurlow, Hutton and Williams many years ago. He was President of the Colorado Springs Real Estate Board in 1921.
Long interested in Horticulture, he was. A leading spirit in the formation of the Colorado Springs Garden Club of which he was the first president.

Mr Pastorius' garden was one of the showplaces of the city with peony, iris, and dahlia blooms making a colorful picture, while his floral displays invariably placed high in the various flower shows for which the community is famous.

He was a member of the El Paso club, Cheyenne Mountain Country club, Broadmoor Golf club, and the Elks club.Mr Pastroius was born in Germantown, Penn., September 27, 1863 and was a direct descendant of Francis Daniel Pastorius, who came to this country from Windsheim, Germany, in 1683 as a representative of the Frankfort Company which settled Germantown. The Frankfort Company had purchased land near Philadelphia from William Penn and Francis Daniel Pastorius, who the united with The Society of Friends became the recognized head and law giver of the settlement.

In the summer of 1885 Mr Pastorius came to Colorado Springs and had lived here ever since. On March 14, 1902 he married Mary Lockhart, a daughter of Mr and Mrs James Lockhart. He is survived by his wife, a son, Washington Pastorius, two brothers, C. Sharpness Pastorius of this city, and Horace E . Pastorius of Redlands, Calif, and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Damon of Newton, Mass and Mrs E McKendrie Hayden also of Newton.

June 20 1950 Gazette Telegraph Front Page Mrs. Hungerford Dies At Her Home After Long Illness

Mrs. Mary L Hungerford, widow of Maj Victor W. Hungerford and one of the most prominent residents of Colorado Springs died this morning at her home, 720 N Cascade Ave. She had been ill for some time.

Mrs Hungerford was the former Mary Lockhart. She was born in Ft. Smith, Arkansas Oct 27, 1877 and came to Colorado Springs as a child. She attended the old Cutler academy and was graduated from college in 1900. She then did post graduate work at Colorado College and a master.s degree was conferred upon her.

She first married the late Francis D Pastorius and some time after his death was married to Major Hungerford in Colorado Springs in 1927. Major Hungerford died March 1, 1949.

Mrs Hungerford was active in many club and other civic affairs. Among organizations of which she was a member the Red Cross, Colorado Springs Garden Club, Colorado Fine Arts Center and the Cheyenne Mountain Country Club. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

Maj Hungerford was a leading lawyer of Colorado Springs and in WW 1 was commander of the 149th Field Artillery, serving in Europe. He was afterwards offered the promotion to colonel but never took it and was widely known throughout the state as Major Hungerford. He served as state commander of the American Legion. Recently a plaque was placed in the City Hall in memory of the high esteem in which he was held by veterans of WW I and other wars. Veterans from various parts of the state attended the unveiling.

Mrs Hungerford is survived by a sister, Mrs Elizabeth Randolph and a brother, William Lockhart, both of West Palm Beach, Florida, a step daughter, Mrs Elizabeth Parsons, Boston, Mass, and a step son, Washington Pastorius, Colorado Springs.

The Law Mortuary has charge of funeral arrangements.
