Birth: Jun. 2, 1914
Death: Dec. 14, 1997

Charles Nathaniel Raibourn, 83, retired businessman, died Sunday, December 14, 1997, in Norman (OK). Mr. Raibourn was born June 2, 1914, at Cordell, Oklahoma, to Jasper Dennis Raibourn and Martha Jane Tilley Raibourn. He grew up in Covington, Oklahoma and graduated from Covington High School. He attended Oklahoma A&M College (OSU) and later George Washington University, DC. He worked as a Linotype operator for The Covington Record, The Fletcher Herald and The Anadarko Daily News.

He married Lurland E. Littlefield of Fletcher, Oklahoma on February 22, 1936. In 1937 he moved to Washington, DC to work for the Government Printing Office as a Linotype operator typesetting the Congressional Record. In 1942 he patented a metalworking machine which tripled the production rate of stainless steel electrodes used to mount the quartz crystals in walkie-talkies and aircraft radios. During World War II he formed Victory Machine Shop and manufactured the electrodes under contract for the US Army Signal Corps. He was granted an award by the U.S. Government for his contribution to the war effort.

After World War II he worked at the Naval Research Laboratory as a precision machinist. While there he worked on a team that installed one of the first radar systems in Orlando, Florida. In 1947 he formed All-Weather Aluminum Awnings, Inc. (later expanded as Air-Lux Awnings and Storm Windows, Inc.) a Washington, DC corporation with manufacturing plants in Silver Hill and Clinton, Maryland. He held the patents for the awning design and engineered the equipment for their production. He retired after 25 years as president of the company.

He was an active member of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, DC from 1947-1981. He was a deacon since 1963 and served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was also a leader of the Youth Training Union and a teacher of the men's Sunday School class. He was an active member of The Gideons International and Volunteers of America, and was a long-time member of the Clinton, Maryland Lion's Club.

He was a licensed private pilot with an instrument rating and a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. His log book showed he flew his Cessna 182 well over 600 hours, plus many other pleasant trips not recorded, from Hyde Field in Clinton, Maryland to Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, South Caroline, Ohio, Illinois and Virginia to visit family, and on vacation trips to Niagara Falls and island hopping in the Bahamas.

In 1981 Mr. Raibourn moved to Norman. He taught two years at Moore-Norman Vo-Tech. He was a member of Norman First Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. He enjoyed traveling all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, throughout Europe, Scandinavia, and the Near East. He had been a member of the Good Sam Club.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Lurland; three daughters, Marian R. Wooldridge of Waxhaw, NC, Gail R. Blancett and her husband, Allen L. of Aiken, SC, and Donna R. Byers and her husband, Kenneth M., of Franktown, CO; two sisters, Rosa Mae Pope of California and Leona Estes of San Antonio, TX; one brother, Roy Lee Raibourn of Alexandria, Virginia; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers: Edward, Robert, Clarence and Benjamin Raibourn.

He will be remembered with love and admiration by his family and close friends for his ingenuity and inventive mind and the numerous devises he engineered--always with an eye toward finding a more efficient way to do a job.
