Biography

Charles Freeman Lewis (05 Mar 1933 - 29 Jan 1995) was a career United States Air Force NCO & Officer and retired from service with the rank of Major. After retirement from the Air Force, he entered the field of restaurant management until eventually opening and an appliance repair business operating first in Arizona and later Rhode Island. After retiring for the second time he and his wife moved to South Carolina where he resided until his death.

Early Life

Charles was the first child and only son of Charles Francis (Borquez) Lewis, a chemist, and Hulda Caroline (Hubbard) Lewis, a housewife. He was born in Globe, Arizona and spent his earliest years in the mining towns of Globe and Miami. Both of his parents were native Arizonans whose ancestors were some of its earliest pioneers.

The family later moved to Phoenix where his parents divorced. His mother and younger sister returned to the Globe-Miami area while Charles stayed with his father in Phoenix for a time before joining his mother and sister.

Charles attended Miami High school where he played baseball and met his future wife.

Career

During the earliest years of his marriage, Charles worked in a bottling plant and in the produce department of the mining company's store of his hometown. Eventually, he enlisted in the United States Air Force.

From about 1952 until 1954 Charles was an engine mechanic instructor at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was then stationed in Korea before being released from the Air Force and returning to his young family living in Miami, Arizona.

After spending a short time as a civilian in Miami and working for one of the local mining companies, he reenlisted in the Air Force and served until retirement.

Charles was serving as a crew chief on C-47s at Williams AFB near Chandler, Arizona when he was selected to attend Officers Candidate School (OCS) at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas in 1959.

After graduating from OCS as a 2nd Lt., Charles trained to become a navigator at Mather AFB in Sacramento, California and Harlingen AFB in Harlingen, Texas. He was then transferred to McConnell AFB in Wichita, Kansas for combat crew training in the B-47 bomber.

Upon completing training at McConnell, Charles and his family made their way to Little Rock AFB near Jacksonville, Arkansas for his first assignment as an Air Force officer and navigator. Until he was transferred to Pease AFB near Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1964.

Charles and his family remained at Pease until 1966 when he was transferred once again. This time the family made its way to Dover AFB near Dover, Delaware where Charles served as a navigator in C-133s until 1967 when he was given orders to report for duty in Viet Nam where he served as a navigator on HC-130s for the Air Force's Air Rescue and Recovery Service.

In 1968 he returned to the United States and was once again assigned to Pease AFB in New Hampshire where he and his family remained until he received orders to transfer to the 67th AIr Rescue and Recovery Squadron based at Morón Air Base near Sevilla, Andalucia, Spain. When the squadron moved to RAF Woodbridge near Woodbridge, Suffolk, England, Charles remained behind to help shut down operations at Morón serving as base commander there until leaving for RAF Bentwaters near Woodbridge, Suffolk, England in 1971 when the base in Spain entered caretaker status.

At RAF Bentwaters Charles served as the club officer (manager) for the Officers' Club until his retirement in 1972 when he and his wife returned to their home state of Arizona and Charles started a new career in restaurant management.

Charles managed a variety of restaurants in Scottsdale, Arizona and SanDiego, California before opening an appliance repair business in Roosevelt, Arizona. He and his wife eventually moved themselves and the business to Warwick, Rhode Island so that they could lend support to their middle daughter whose husband had passed away leaving her with two young children.

Charles remained in Rhode Island operating his business until his final retirement when he hand his wife moved to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina where they resided until his death.

Personal Life

Charles and his wife were very young when they married and neither had finished high school.

Charles was the father of three girls and one son who died in infancy.
