Born Ethelbert Lucille, "Lucille" as she was known, was the daughter of Halvor Adolph and Amanda Elinor (Lundberg) Lethenstrom. Her father's parents were from Sweden and Norway, and her mother herself was born in Sweden. In the 1930's the family lived in Audubon, Minnesota, where her father was a farmer. Lucille had two brothers: Mervin Arville (Find-a-Grave 110354121), and Lt. Col. Wallace Vincent Lethenstrom (Find-a-Grave 87320423), and two sisters, Frances Eleanor (Lethenstrom) Lidstrom (Find-a-Grave 113974934), and Eunice Viola (Lethenstrom) Solem (Find-a-Grave 142963965).

In 1940, Lucille was living on her own in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, not far from home, where she was a file clerk for a loan company.

She was married to Harold Edwin Mackey on August 11, 1951, at San Francisco, California. The couple lived in San Francisco, and later in Carmichael, California.
