Eulogy – Father Marvin M. Meitz

What can one say about Tim Leonard? Certainly he was larger than life. He refused to be ignored. If Tim was in the room, everybody knew it. His enthusiasm and his delight in the small things were readily apparent. His delight in his name - and your name, his initials that he never tired of pointing out, and liked to have you repeat. His delight in van rides, and basketball hoops, and kids riding bicycles, and counting the trucks that passed by, and presents under the tree, and Santa, and Frosty the Snowman, and his birthday that was always coming tomorrow. This was all right out there. Tim was an open book. If you ever met him, you know what delighted him. And he could really laugh, and you found yourself laughing just because he was.

Oh, I am not saying Tim, like all of us, didn't have his moments. He moved according to his own inner sense of time, and that didn't always match yours, which could be maddening. Sometimes, he could find that last nerve of yours and ride it, but then, just before you turned out the light and left his room, you would hear his voice quietly say, "thank you!" and your heart would just melt.

In the Early Church, those whom we now refer to as developmentally disabled were called "oi hagioi" – "the holy ones" – the saints of God. It might be hard for us to think of Tim as a saint, but saints, like poets, are not plastic people free from blemishes. Rather they are God's way of pointing us to the truly important - delight in the present moment, in people, in one another, and not media hype, Hollywood glitz and purely monetary concerns. Tim's infectious delight in a simple van ride is instructive for us all. Timothy Leonard truly was, is, one of God's holy ones. May his memory be eternal!
