FARMER, 58, DIES SUDDENLY
Arthur E Lemmon Was Widely Known as Legion Worker

Arthur E Lemmon, 58, widely known Decatur county farmer and prominent state and national worker of The American Legion for over a quarter of a century, died in his sleep at 12:15 a.m. today at his home at 320 North Jackson street.

For the past four years Mr Lemmon had been in declining health but in recent weeks had appeared to be in normal physical condition. His sudden passing came as a great shock to citizens of Greensburg and Decatur county.

Born in Greensburg on September 7, 1889, he was the son of Alexander and Juliet Spilker Lemmon. Following military service in World War I, he was united in marriage to Willamette Pleak on december 10, 1919, after which the couple located on the Pleak farm, two and one-half miles northwest of Greensburg. Four years ago they moved to their present home at 320 North Jackson street, Greensburg.

NATIONAL POST
Active in the child welfare program of The American Legion in state and natinal committee work, Mr Lemmon was honored in 1945 by being appointed as chairman of the national child welfare committee of the Legion in Area D, embracing 12 states in the middle west. He was chosen for this post during the administration of Edward W Sieberling as national commander of the Legion.

A charter member of the Welsh-Crawley-Kramer post No 129, American Legion, of this city, he served as post commander in 1927 and was designated as Tenth district-commander in 1938. He was a frequent delegate to state and national conventions and had a wide acquaintance among Legion leaders.

Prior to his appointment as area chairman, Mr Lemmon has served two terms as child welfare chairman of the Indiana department of the Legion. He had been on the national Legion child welfare committee for the past 12 years.

WILLIAMETTE LEMMON

Mrs. Williamette Lemmon, a resident of 320 Jackson Street since 1943, died Monday evening at 10:35 in the Hospitality Nursing Home, where she had been a patient for about six years.

Mrs. Lemmon was born March 17, 1892, on the Pleak farm homestead in Decatur County, the daughter of Walter B. and Laura Robbins Pleak.

She lived on the old homestead for 50 years before moving into Greensburg to the Jackson Street residence.

She was married to Arthur E. Lemmon Dec. 6, 1918 in Decatur County, and he preceded her in death Aug. 13, 1948.

Mrs. Lemmon served several terms on the board of the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Childrens Home in Knightstown; she was appointed by Judge John Goddard to serve on the Decatur County Welfare Board for several terms; she was one of the early members of the American Legion Auxiliary where she held local offices and served as District President; she was an over-50 year member of the Eastern Star; a former member of the DAR; a member of Delta Theta Tau sorority and the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she held offices in the Women's Association and was devotions chairman for many years.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Betty Shumaker, Greensburg; four grandsons: Wesley, Robert and James Shumaker of Greensburg and Thomas Arthur Shumaker, Tucson, Ariz.; and one great-granddaughter, Carrie Marie Shumaker, Greensburg. She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Kanouse, who died May 20, 1972.

Private services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home with the Rev. F. William Clemenson officiating and with burial in the South Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today. The family requests that memorials be in the form of contributions to the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Childrens Home in Knightstown Fund through the Welsh-Crawley-Kramer American Legion Post 129.
