Son of Martha Jane (Kipp) and Jacob Lashells.

He served in the Union army in the Civil War.

He married Samantha Wolverton, probably between 1860 and 1870. They moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, between 1880 and 1900. He was a grocery man in Shannon, Carroll County, Illinois, and a wholesale grocer traveling salesman in Marshalltown,Iowa at the time of his death.

They had 4 children: Harriet E., Harry M., Simon Wolverton and Albert Earnest LaShelle.
