Son of Richard Lynn Sr and Margaret Marion Compton Johnson.

He attended Pleasant Hall School from 1934 to 1941 and was graduated from C. E. Byrd High School in 1945. In 1950, he received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Southwestern Louisiana Institute in Lafayette.

He started his own firm representing various manufacturers of air conditioning and heating equipment under the name of Johnson Sales Engineering Company and later as Colonial Mechanical Sales Corporation with offices in Shreveport, New Iberia, and Lafayette.

She was a member of the Algiers Methodist Church, South and served as the organist and youth counselor. She was also an active member of the Algiers Little Theater and an employee of Louisiana Power & Light Company for fifteen years.
