Dolores Frances Jalbert Pumphrey, age 96, awoke in the presence of God, May 29, 2006.
She was born November 23, 1909, to Joseph and Catherine Daugherty Jalbert in Woonsocket, RI, the second of seven children. She graduated from Woonsocket High School and the Graduate School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in Orthoptics.
In 1932, she married Dr. Gordon H. Pumphrey. They both worked a the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary where Mrs. Pumphrey organized the School for Orthoptic Technicians, the first of such schools in the United States. During World War II, they lived in Washington, D.C. and Santa Fe, New Mexico. After the war, they moved to Mt. Vernon, Ohio where her husband established his practice of Otolaryngology. She worked as an orthoptist in his office for many years. She was a member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority in Mt. Vernon, and, as a member of that sorority, was instrumental in bringing Meals on Wheels to the elderly.
Dolores was preceded in death by her husband; and son, John Malcolm Pumphrey. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy; grandchildren, Kristen Ellis Hinds, John Pumphrey Ellis and Sarah Ellis Barth; great-granddaughter, Wallis Margarethe Barth; sister, Barbara Jalbert; brother, Col. Donald Jalbert; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be Saturday, June 3, at 11 a.m. at Porter Loring North Chapel, 2102 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232
