"Funeral services for Robert John Jackson, 12-year-old St. Joseph parochial school boy of Hammond who was crushed to death by a truck Friday afternoon in State Line avenue, will be held tomorrow at 8 a. m. from St. Joseph's church. Interment will be at Mount Mercy cemetery at Gary.

Robert was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Jackson, 16 Carroll street, Hammond. In addition to his parents, the boy is survived by a brother, James; a sister, Dorothy Jean, and grandmother, Mrs. Christina Meyer of Hammond.

The boy was in the sixth grade at St. Joseph's school, where it was said he was an honor student and an active participant in school athletics. He also was a member of the Junior Holy Name society.

Young Jackson's body will lie at the family residence pending the funeral, it was announced.

The boy was sitting in a toy automobile in front of Nicholas Austgen's grocery market at 5935 State Line avenue Friday afternoon, front wheels of the toy car in the street and the rear wheels on the sidewalk, when he was run over by a Cudahy Packing company truck driven by Jean J. Kalpsh, 44, of 2813 West 98th place, Evergreen Park.

Robert was talking to another boy, Donald Lauer, 12, of 6648 Van Buren avenue, Hammond while sitting directly in front of the wheels of the truck which was parkted. Kalpsh said he had made a delivery at the store and entered the truck's cab without noticing the boy. The truck's high radiator and fender obscured the boy from view, he said, and he started to drive away when he heard a scream. The truck passed over the boy's head, killing him instantly.

Kalpsh was taken into custody by Hammond police and held under $5,000 bond pending outcome of a coroner's inquest."
