Ruth Ann Hults, 101, of Great Falls, died of natural causes Tuesday, Nov. 8 at Benefis Skilled Nursing Center.

Ruth was born Nov. 6, 1910, on a farm in Park County, Ind., near the very small town of Carbon.

Her father was a retired minister from the United Brethren Church. She lost her father during the great 1918-1919 influenza epidemic. Her mother, unable to continue the farming operation, moved with her children to Riley, Ind., and got a job as a telephone switchboard operator. She taught Ruth to handle the switchboard, which was kept in their home.

She graduated from high school in Riley in 1928, and then as a registered nurse from the Union Hospital School of Nursing in Terre Haute, Ind., in 1932. She then took a postgraduate course specializing in obstetrics at the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. For two years she did private duty nursing and worked for a doctor in Terre Haute whose practice included a lot of private home-birth baby deliveries.

She joined Lowell, her high school sweetheart, in Wyoming, and they were married in 1935. Lowell was a student at the University of Wyoming. When he graduated in 1937, they moved to Denver. Their son was born in 1938, in Denver.

In the summer of 1944, the family moved to Great Falls in a "well-used, loaded to the gills" 1936 Desoto four-door sedan. During the ensuing 25 years, Ruth continued to do obstetrical nursing and became the head nurse and supervisor at the Deaconess and Columbus hospitals. Ruth also worked for the Northwest Medical Group, retiring in 1969.

Ruth was active in First United Methodist Church, and was a member for more than 65 years. Ruth also was a member of the local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

Her interests included cooking, gardening, fishing and boating. Her love was raising roses. She was known to be a good cook, and usually prepared the family meals from scratch.

Ruth is survived by a son and his wife; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Lowell; and her brother, Paul.
