Jessie May Howell, a former local resident of Longton died unexpectedly April 7, 1960 in the Sarasota Memorial hospital, Sarasota, Fla., at the age of 49 years.
Jessie was the daughter of Patsy Norris and Charles Wolverton; born May 8, 1910 at Greenleaf, Kansas. In her infancy her parents moved to a farm near Moline where she grew to womanhood.
Jessie received her education in the Moline schools. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior early in life and united with the Christian church in Moline later transferring her membership to the Methodist church at Longton.
Jessie and Mode F. Howell were united in marriage in Oklahoma on March 6, 1929. Three children were born to this union, two sons and a daughter.
Jessie was a devoted wife, a loving wife, a loving mother, a dear friend and neighbor and an inspiration to all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her father, C. E. Wolverton and her two sons John Theodore and Francis Wayne. Theodore was killed in the Korean War in 1951 and Wayne was killed in an accident while in service at Camp Pendleton, Calif., in 1956.
Jessie leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Joan Wymer and son-in-law, Robert Wymer, Mrs. C. E. Wolverton of Kansas City, Mo.; four brothers: Glen E. of Hollister, Mo.; Dale H. of Moline; and Lowell J. of Overland Park; three sisters, Audrey Mills of Moline, Edwina Duncan of Kansas City, Mo.; Wilma Sheel of LaJunta, Colo. and one grandson James Richard Howell of Wichita, many other relatives and host of friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10:30 in the Methodist church at Longton. Rev Chester Eshbaugh officiating. Interment was in the Longton cemetery under the direction of the Crumrine Funeral Home.
Music was furnished by Sharon Foster Nichols and Coleen Palinsi. They were accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Linnie Terrell.
Pallbearers were Lowell, Glenn, L. D., Dale and Ercle Wolverton and W. J. Duncan Jr.
Shed not too many tears when I leave;
Be brave enough to smile,
It will not shorten, howsoe'er you grieve,
Your loneliness the whie.
I would not have you sorrowful and sad,
but joyfully recall the glorious
companionship we've had.
And thank God for it all.
Don't let your face grow tear
streaking pale and wan;
Have heart for mirth and song--
Rejoyce, though for a little while I've gone.
That I was here so long.
For if I thought your faith would fail you so
And leace you so distressed,
That sobbing to mu body's grave you'd go,
My spirit could not rest.
