John Robert Copeland
1928 ~ 2014
John Robert Copeland, age 85, died at his home on June 6, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer.
John (known to his friends as Jack) was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 22, 1928 to Edith and Fredrick Copeland. When he was seven, he moved with his older brother Jim, nine, and his parents to St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from University High School in 1946. As a teenager, John was very active in sports, playing on University High's basketball and football teams, and excelling at track —his nickname was "Spider" because of his long legs.
After graduating from high school, John attended the University of Indiana for a couple of years, but then transferred to Washington University in St. Louis where he majored in business and graduated. He then enrolled in the Air Force, completed advanced air flight training, and flew the RF-80 in the Korean War, at times participating in reconnaissance missions.
After the war ended, John worked as a pilot for Pan American Airways. He flew for Pan Am for 32 years, achieving the rank of Captain for many of those years. His flights took him all over the world, particularly to Asia and Europe. While on a trip layover in Honolulu, Oahu, John met Geraldine, a stewardess for Pan American Airways, and they were married December 30, 1956. They had three children, Laura, John and Carole, and spent much of their married life together in beautiful Santa Cruz, California. In 2004, they moved to Boise, Idaho, to be closer to family.
John had many interests—history, astronomy, golf, gardening, politics and especially flying. He was gifted in all aspects of flying, from executing long transatlantic and transpacific flights to possessing remarkable knowledge of aerodynamics and airplane technology. His favorite plane to fly was the Boeing 747.
John's dynamic and accomplished life did not preclude a very close and loving relationship with his family. He was vitally interested and involved in family life; even in his last few days, he was thinking of and asking about each member of his family. John loved a good story, and he had many funny and interesting ones of his own to share from his work and travel. He was also a generous man, and gave compassionately to those in need.
John was preceded in death by his mother Edith Mary Moore, and his father, Frederick James Copeland, and his brother, James Fredrick Copeland II.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Geraldine Copeland; son and daughter-in law, John Robert II and Lori Copeland; daughter and son-in-law, Carole Elizabeth and Steve Hengl and daughter and son-in-law, Laura Jay and Graham Wolstenholme; grandchildren, Joshua Copeland, Emily Copeland, Elizabeth Copeland, Matthew Hengl, Katelyn Hengl, Evelyn Hengl, Benjamin Wolstenholme, and Isaac Wolstenholme; nephew, Jim Copeland.
A private family viewing was held for John on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Summers Funeral Home in Boise. Memorials may be made in his name to Boise Rescue Mission.
