PORT ARTHUR NEWS - September 9, 1982, Port Arthur, Texas
Rachel Mary Holter (nee Reed), 82, of 2921 Sixth Street, organist emeritus for the United Methodist Temple and a 54-year resident of Port Arthur, died at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday in Park Place Hospital. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Temple, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. "She contributed so much to the music of this community," said longtime friend Dorothy Geer. "She will be greatly missed." "It's hard to tell the things that were so special about Mary," said Barbara Meeker, UMT choir director. "She was a beautiful person." Mrs. Holter, wife of Cameron Burnside Holter, was born in Connecticut and graduated from Bucknell University and School of Music.

PORT ARTHUR NEWS - May 18, 1975, Port Arthur, Texas
Mary Holter is retiring after 45 years as church organist for the United Methodist Temple – and she hopes, as she explains with a twinkle in her eye, "to be remembered not for how long I played but for how well." A reception honoring the departing musician will be held from 2.30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the fellowship hall of the United Methodist Temple, 4101 Hwy. 73. The chancel choir of the church is host for the event. Born in 1900, the 75-year-old Mrs. Holter began playing piano when she was seven years old. As a teenager, she played the reed organ at the small Baptist church in Connecticut where her father was minister and went on to obtain a liberal arts degree at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. She began her 45-year-long association with music in Port Arthur in 1928, when she and her husband came to the city from Bayonne, New Jersey. Mrs. Holter became organist at the First Presbyterian Church; then moved to what was then the First Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1930 (now the United Methodist Temple). The petite organist has seen the church organ rebuilt twice and renovated at least three other times and has seen at least seven church choir directors come and go. "There’s a great difference between a church organ and the popular electronic organ," Mrs. Holter explained, in talking of the diminishing number of serious church musicians. "Very few people are seriously going into the church music field – it requires much dedication," she said. "Also, you have to be pretty careful about the type of music you play for a congregation. Popular music would rarely lie acceptable." Retirement will be pleasant for Mrs. Holter, she says, as she plans to play the piano for pleasure. Active in Port Arthur music circles, she taught piano and organ lessons for many years, and only recently gave up her teaching. She is a member of the Community Concert Board, the Symphony Club, Port Arthur Music Teachers Association, and was dean for two years of the now disbanded local chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She and her husband, Cameron, a retired Texaco chemical engineer, have three daughters, Mary Lou (Mrs. J. R. Chamblee), Pawhuska, Oklahoma; Ruth (Mrs. B. V. Robins), Atlanta, Georgia; and Carol (Mrs. Gary Westley), Knoxville, Tennessee; and six grandchildren.
