THAYER, H. STANDISH

H. Standish Thayer, Ph.D. of South Nyack, New York passed away on August 8th, 2008, after a brief illness. Born in 1923, he enjoyed a distinguished career as professor of philosophy at Columbia University, City College and finally The Graduate School of The City University of New York, from which he retired in 1990 as Professor Emeritus of Philosophy. Loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by wife Elisabeth, children Hewitt, Alexandrea and Jonathan, and grandchildren Madeline, David, and Mary. A prolific writer on the subject of Pragmatism, he garnered the respect and admiration of colleagues and students, and was the recipient of numerous honours, including two appointments to The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. In addition, he served on The Board of Advisors of The Cousteau Society, was vice president of The John Dewey Foundation and was a member of the advisory committees for editions of the works of William James and Charles Sanders Pierce. In retirement, he enjoyed a career as an artist as prolific as was his academic career, producing works in various media including oil and watercolor painting, etching, print-making and sculpture. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Hannemann Funeral Home, Inc. in Nyack. An 88-year-old Westerly woman died and three other people were injured Sunday in a car crash in Hopkinton, police say.

The two-vehicle crash, a head-on collision, happened at 2:34 p.m. on Spring Street, according to Hopkinton Police Capt. Mark Carrier.

The woman who died, identified as Elisabeth Thayer, was a passenger in a Jeep Cherokee driven by her 57-year-old daughter, Alexandrea Martino, also of Westerly, police say.

Martino was treated at Rhode Island Hospital for internal injuries, and released.

The driver of the second vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, was 34-year-old Kevin Brown, of Hope Valley, police said. He remained at Rhode Island Hospital on Monday with arm, hand and rib injuries. Brown's passenger, identified as a 35-year-old Richmond resident, was taken to Kent Hospital for evaluation and released.

The police said people in both vehicles did appear to be wearing their seat belts, and air bags deployed in both.

The police are still investigating the cause of the crash, according to Carrier. He said the Jeep and the other vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, were heading in opposite directions. There was no sign of driver impairment, Carrier said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Hopkinton police at (401) 377-7750."
