"Estate Gifts

Opening Doors

A gift from a stranger can change your life forever. At least that's what Elnora Hennegin O'Neill '52 believed when she created a scholarship to honor her parents, Wayne and Margaret Hennegin, and funded it with a gift from her estate. Elnora's niece, Mary Beth Nelson Scott '78, will oversee the scholarship, which will provide Northwest tuition and room and board for female high school graduates from Worth County, Mo.

"Wayne and Margaret did everything they could to make sure that their two daughters had the resources they needed to be able to go to college," Mary Beth said. "I think Elnora truly appreciated the sacrifices her parents made and wanted to be able to provide the same type of assistance to students who were from her roots."

Growing up near Sheridan in Worth County, Elnora attended Northwest and graduated in 1952, majoring in biology. She moved west after graduating and married Terrence O'Neill, an attorney from Denver, where they raised their only son, Terry Jr. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling. Elnora died of cancer in 2001.

"She was champion of education and knew that it could make all the difference in the world for these kids," Mary Beth said. "Her commitment to this scholarship was her way of saying thanks and opening the door for others."
