Dr. Richard Reece celebrated his 85th birthday last Friday, July 11, 2008, with family and friends, and the following evening, he went to bed and then joined with his Heavenly Father. Richard was a loving husband, a wonderful father and a proud grandfather, having lived in Salina for the past 37 years. He was born July 11, 1923, in Hammond, Ind., the son of John and Elma Armstrong Reece. He grew up in Kansas City, Kan., and served our nation proudly as a physician in the United States Army in World War II and in the Korean War.

Richard and his wife of 59 years, the former Ruby Ruth Hendrickson, were married on Nov. 24, 1948, in Concordia. Ruby survives him, as do his sons, Richard R. and wife Beth Reece, Littleton, Colo., and John and wife Cindy Reece, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and daughters, Marlis and husband Tom Wilbur, Salina, and Robin and husband Michael Koken, Colorado Springs, Colo. He had six grandchildren, Jorie and Jacob Reece, Brock and Brooke Wilbur, and Cathy and Andrew Koken, all of whom he loved very much.

He was a founding physician and radiologist with United Radiology in Salina, where he was a partner for 15 years. Prior to that, he served as the deputy health commissioner for the state of Colorado for nearly 20 years. He was one of the greatest Kansas Jayhawk fans of all time and never missed watching or listening to a game. He was a member of Salina Country Club, American Medical Association, Saline County Health Association, University of Kansas Alumni Association, Harvard Alumni Association and Salina's Sunrise Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. today at Ryan Mortuary, where family will receive friends from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, Salina, with burial in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

Memorials may be sent to Kaye Pogue Hospice Center or the church, in care of the mortuary.

Ruby Ruth Reece was born on a farm in Washington County on May 6, 1925. She was the daughter of a family of Swedish descent, Victor and Agnes (Hedin) Hendrickson. On September 4, 2013, Ruby went to be with her Heavenly Father after a prolonged illness.

Ruby graduated from Concordia High School and Kansas State University, and she attended the University of Kansas-School of Nursing. It was there that she met the love of her life, Richard J. Reece. Dr. Reece served in the Korean War in Japan, was a health department director in the state of Colorado and was a founding partner of United Radiology, in Salina, Kansas, in 1971.

Ruby quietly worked behind the scenes in serving people of Salina. She and Dr. Reece were the spark in creating the original Salina Central Booster Club when they moved to town from Lakewood, Colo.

She had a heart for children and, along with Wanda Macy, founded a program called Mornings Out For Moms, which worked to help young mothers in caring for their children. This program eventually developed into the Child Advocacy and Parenting Services organization, known as CAPS.

Ruby served on various medical auxiliaries and supported hospital fund-raising projects. She enjoyed bridge with friends, travel with her husband on Jayhawk tours, their chalet in Colorado, her faith journey and time spent at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, and her stays at Eaglecrest and Presbyterian Manor. Most recently, she attended Trinity United Methodist Church, and she always looked forward to Sundays.

She loved children and had four of her own: Richard Reece, Marlis Wilbur, Robin Koken and John Reece. She had six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
