David Helton, 28, fatally hurt in bulldozer accident

David Austin Helton, 28, son of Mrs. Edith Helton of Tuscumbia
and the late Addison Helton, was fatally injured in a construction accident
Saturday morning in West Union, IA. He was driving a bulldozer, moving big
rocks to make a fill.

Two men reported they had left him only a second before when,
hearing a sudden noise, they turned to see the bulldozer turning over on
him.

The accident happened early Saturday morning. Mrs. Helton first
received a call at 9 a.m. saying that her son was in a critical condition in
a hospital. Approximately 30 minutes later she received a second call that
he had passed away.

They had planned to operate immediately after the first call but
it was not learned whether or not he was in surgery when he died. It was
reported that he was crushed from his waist down.

Mr. Helton had been engaged in construction work for the past 12
years. He was born at Tuscumbia Aug. 14, 1928.

Hedges Funeral Home of Iberia went to Iowa after the body which
lay in state at the funeral home until Tuesday evening. The body was then
taken to the home of his mother. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.
Wednesday at Mt. Zion Church. The Rev. Roy Weece of Eldon officiated.
Interment was in the church cemetery.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by three brothers and
three sisters: Aaron and Bennett of the home, Bernard and Mrs. Sue Jarrett
of San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Avis Roam of Maywood, Calif., and Mrs. Nelda
Eagles of Greenfield, Mo. Mrs. Eagles arrived Saturday evening, and the
family from California on Monday evening.
