Thomas A. Helm , 69, of Smithville, MO, passed away of cancer on Tuesday, August 28, 2001, at his home, surrounded by his family. A lifelong Kansas City area resident, he was born October 26, 1931 in Jackson County, MO, to Herman and Mary Helm , the second of five children. On June 9, 1950, he married Dorothy Ellen Greer of Kansas City and they had four children. Dorothy passed away in 1969. On July 11, 1971, he married Carol Jean Wolverton of Stanberry, MO and they had two children. Tom was an engineer, working until 1971 for Airco (Pure Carbonic). He then began working for TWA, retiring in 1993. Tom was a devoted Christian, who passionately loved his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his older sister, Mary E. Wright, Mary's son, Douglas Wright and his younger sister, Vera Helm Grider. Surviving are Mary's husband, Lewis Wright and her daughter, Lynda Zoll of Chula Vista, CA and Lynda's children, Brian and Marilyn. Also surviving are Vera's daughter, Shirley Scott and her family of Springfield, MO and Vera's son, Ben Grider. Tom is also survived by his younger brother, Don Helm and wife, Linda of Kansas City, Don's children, Don and Roger and their families; his younger brother, John Helm and wife, Bonnie of Sugar Creek, MO, their daughters, Diana, Lori, Audrey, Kylah and Billie Renee. From his marriage to Dorothy, Tom is survived by his son, Tom Helm of New York City; his son, Mike Helm of San Diego, CA and Mike's daughters, Natalie and Deidre of Chester, IL; his son, Dan Helm and wife, Valerie of Smithville and their family, Heather Helm and Shane Mecham of Austin, TX, Mark Helm and Valerie Flury of Omaha, NE, Janie Helm of Smithville and honorary granddaughter, Karen Goodner of Smithville; his daughter, Dorothy Deanne "Dottie" Lafferty and husband, Patrick of Kansas City and their daughter, Colleen. Tom and Dorothy also had a stillborn child, "Junior" in 1951, and Matthew Mark, who died shortly after birth in 1969. Tom is also survived by his loving wife, Carol Jean of the home, and their sons, Ryan Lee Helm and Scott Trevor Helm of Smithville.

A celebration of Tom's life will be held on Saturday, September 1, at the First Baptist Church of Smithville, MO at 10 a.m., with arrangements by Hixson-Klein Funeral Home in Smithville. Visitation will begin at the church at 9 a.m. prior to service. Burial will be at 1 p.m. in High Ridge Cemetery in Stanberry, MO. If friends would prefer to make a donation in lieu of flowers, the family suggests the American Cancer Society or the Emmanuel Bible Church of Smithville.

Carol Jean Wolverton Helm, 59, Smithville, died Dec. 2, 2004 at North Kansas City Hospital, of heart failure. She was born June 4, 1945 in Stanberry; the youngest daughter of Onie and Ethel (Petty) Wolverton. On July 11, 1971, she married Tom Helm of Smithville. They had two children in addition to Tom and his departed wife, Dorothy's, four children. Mrs. Helm was a high school teacher and homemaker, working as a physical education instructor for the Smithville School District and later as a substitute teacher. She was an avid golfer and a member of the doting mother's club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, and her parents. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Lloyd Poff of Stanberry; son, Ryan Helm and wife, Sarah, of Smithville; son, Scott Helm
and wife, Jenny, of Shawnee, KS.; step-sons, Tom Helm, New York City; Mike Helm, Chula Vista, CA.; Dan Helm and wife Valerie, Smithville; step-daughter, Dorothy Lafferty and husband, Patrick, Kansas City; nine grandchildren; close friend, Patricia Bowling, of the home; aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held on Dec. 7 at the First Baptist Church in Smithville. Graveside services and burial were held at High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry.
