"Hiram Ross Passes Away - An aged and honorable citizen dies Friday evening at his home in Jefferson County---Hiram Ross a well known former resident of this community who owned and lived on the farm north of town, now owned by E. W. Green, died after a brief illness with pneumonia at his home near Dix in Jefferson County last Friday evening. His death is deeply mourned by his friends and former neighbors here some of whom have known him for over half a century. Hiram Eason Ross, beloved son of Jacob and Abigail Ross, was born in Greene County, Pennsylvania, January. 11th, 1823, and died at his home Dix Station, Illinois. February 17th, 1911, age 88 years, one month and six days. He was the fourth of nine children, all of whom have preceded him, excepting two; John L. Ross, age 90 at Mt. Vernon, Illinois, and Tom, a younger brother, about 80 years old of Greene County, Pennsylvania. Deceased was united in marriage to Prudence Lucy Harvey January 11th, 1857, with whom he lived until separated by death, October 23rd, 1910. To this union were born six children of which but two are left to mourn his absence, viz: Mrs. G. W. Prucell of Hindsboro, Illinois, and Hiram N. of Dix, Illinois.

He was converted and united with the Christian church, then holding its meeting at the Gill school house near Hugo under the ministry of Professor Black, late of Chicago. He has continued a devoted Christian until death, attending services until deafness and old age began to throw their robes around him.

He came to Douglas County in about 1854 and remained near Hindsboro until 1901 when he sold his farm and purchased the one on which he died, adjoining, Dix, Jefferson County, IL. In early life he was made a Mason and throughout his life he lived its principles, enjoyed its companionship, and was laid to rest according to the beautiful and impressive rites of the ancient and honorable institution.

The family and remains were accompanied to Hindsboro by a Masonic escort on Saturday February 18 and Sunday morning February 19 in the presence of a large assembly of old friends his funeral services were held at the Christian church, Hindsboro by the former pastor, Rev. J. S. Ross, assisted by Rev. Crane, pastor of the M. E. Church at Hindsboro after which his remains were escorted to the cemetery at Hugo by the Masonic Lodge at Hindsboro."
