Funeral services for James David "J.D." Harris formerly of this area will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2012 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Private interment will lay J.D. to rest next to his wife, Frances at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Visitation has been set for Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ertel Chapel.

J.D. was born July 12, 1923 in Frederick, Okla. the son of William Earl and Orpha Antonia Hazel (Garvin) Harris. He passed away in Louisville, Colo. on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at the age of 89.

At a young age, J.D. and his family moved to the Dove Creek area. After graduation from high school, J.D. attended Fort Lewis College at Hesperus for a winter before going into the Army. While stationed in Augusta, Ga. J.D. met Frances Lowery; the couple married February 12, 1950 in North Augusta, S.C. After moving several times J.D. and Frances finally were able to settle in Dove Creek in the latter part of 1953. The family grew from two to four with the addition of a daughter, Jerry Olivia and a son, Bradford William.

J.D. was a mail contractor for over 50 years in the Dove Creek area. He also held the contract from Durango to Dove Creek for more than 20 years, retiring at the age of 80. J.D. and Frances moved to Durango in 1976 to better be able to facilitate the Durango/Dove Creek run. When Frances took ill the couple moved to Longmont to be nearer to their daughter and son-in-law.

Surviving J.D. is his only daughter, Jeri Jackson and husband, Butch; two grandchildren, Joy and Jamie; five great grandchildren; his siblings, Hazel, Ruby Jean, Betty Lou, and John; and numerous nieces and nephews. J.D. was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Frances Harris; his son, Brad Harris; his parents, Earl and Orpha Harris; and by his siblings, Lucile, Bill, and Thurman.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of James David "J.D." Harris with the Alzheimer's Association.

Funeral services for Longmont, Colo., resident and former area resident Frances Mae Harris will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Private interment will take place at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Visitation has been scheduled for 1 p.m. to service time at Ertel Chapel.

Frances was born on Sept. 29, 1923 in Abbeyville County, S.C., the daughter of Ralph and Susie Mae (Barton) Lowery. She passed away on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at Peaks Care Center in Longmont, Colo., at the age of 87.

On Feb. 12, 1950, Frances married James David "J.D." Harris in South Carolina. Frances and J.D. were avid square dancers. She loved to spend time with her family and people in general, Frances will be greatly missed. In her free time she enjoyed reading and crocheting.

Surviving Frances are her husband, J.D. Harris of Longmont, Colo.; her daughter, Jeri Jackson and husband, Butch of Longmont, Colo.; her grandchildren, Jamie Jackson and Joy Boritzki; her great-grandchildren, Abigail, Emily, Olivia, and Philip Jr.; and her sister, Helen King of Flowery Branch, Ga. Frances was preceded in death by her parents; by her son, Bradford William Harris; and by her brother, Clarence Jackson Lowery.
