CARL SPARKS, 49, CORY HIGHWAY WORKER, KILLED

Carl Sparks, 49-year-old Clay County highway employee of near Cory, was killed almost instantly about 3 pm Tuesday when the bed of a dump truck fell on him, crushing his chest.
Working on a county highway southwest of Ashboro, Sparks was attempting a repair of the truck hoist beneath the dump bed when it suddenly fell on him.
Clay County coroner, Dr. Chas Brush, returned a verdict of accidental death due to a crushed chest.
A fellow worker, Basil Nicoson, said Sparks uttered several words before he died but that he was unable to understand them.
Sparks is survived by the widow, Kathryn, a daughter, Miss Betty Joan Sparks-at home; the mother, Ella Sparks-Cory; and two brothers, Orville Sparks-Cory & Everett Sparks-Lewis.
The deceased man was born at home south of Cory on Sept 27, 1902-the son of Hiram & Ella (Van Dyke) Sparks. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
The body was taken to the Rentschler Funeral Home in Centerpoint pending funeral arrangements.
