Elsworth E. Schafer, 89, of Clay City, IN, passed away at 5:45am August 31, 2011 following a lengthy illness.

He was born November 8, 1921, in Clay City, IN the son of Daniel and Ida (Lambert) Schafer. Elsworth graduated from Clay City High School with the class of 1941. Elsworth's lifelong career was as a farmer. He was a handyman and enjoyed woodworking. Elsworth married Lorene Halt March 13, 1948.

Elsworth was a member of the Union Chapel Church of the Nazarene and served on many mission trips with the church.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Herman Schafer, Walter Schafer and Herschel Schafer.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Lorene Schafer; daughter Janice Rumbley (Dan) of Boonville, IN; son Steve Schafer (Rhonda) of Clay City; four grandchildren: Kevin Schafer (Staci) of Clay City, Erin Rumbley Doss (Rodger) of Lafayette, IN, Brian Schafer (Jennifer) of Gaithersburg, MD and Erica Rumbley of Lexington, KY; great grandchildren: Eliana Schafer and Desmond Doss as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Information
Services will be at the Union Chapel Church of the Nazarene, 5970 S. St. Rd. 59 Clay City, IN Friday at 11am with Pastor Jeff Sumner officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church Thursday from 4-8pm and again Friday from 10am until time of services.

H. Lorene Schafer, 94, of Clay City, passed away at Cobblestone Crossing on Feb. 22, 2019. She was born in Cory, Ind. on Nov. 21, 1924, the daughter of Floyd and Moyne (Rogers) Halt.

Lorene graduated from Cory High School with the class of 1942. She married Elsworth Schafer on March 13, 1948; he preceded her in death in 2011. She and Elsworth ran the family farm north of Clay City. She enjoyed reading, gardening, doing yardwork especially mowing the grass.

She was a longtime member of the Union Chapel Church of the Nazarene where she received the Distinguished Service Award. There she volunteered her time as the church treasurer, song leader and also helped with children's church. She and Elsworth also enjoyed going on mission trips each summer often to Central America.

She was preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Moyne Halt, her husband Elsworth Schafer and a sister Norma Dayhuff.

She is survived by her two children: Janice Rumbley and husband Dan of Kokomo, Ind. and Steve Schafer and wife Rhonda of Clay City; grandchildren: Kevin Schafer (Staci) of Clay City, Erin Doss (Rodger) of Kokomo, Indiana, Brian Schafer (Jenny) of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Erica Rumbley of Kokomo, Indiana; great-grandchildren: Audrey, Caroline, Bethany, Desmond, Donovan, Ellie, Isaac, Drew, and Wesley; two sisters Wilma Lockman and Erma Clifton (Bob); as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.

Visitation will be at Union Chapel Church of the Nazarene 5970 IN-59, Clay City, Ind. 47841 on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Services will be held at the church at 1 p.m. with Pastor David Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
