Mrs. Gregory is Taken by Death
Widely Known for Activities in Church and Clubs; Funeral Will Be Friday P.M.
Mrs. F.W. Gregory, who had been ill since last Christmas day, 1919, died at her residence on Roby street at 8:50 p.m. yesterday. An operation for peritonitis was performed Jan. 1, 1920, and it was apparent from the first that recovery was doubtful. All possible medical aid was given her and this, with her unusual vitality and determination to live, prolonged life.
Prominent in Church and Clubs.
Mrs. Gregory, prior to her illness, occupied a position of prominence in church and club activities of the city, and was also known for her interest in athletics. She was a member of Woman’s club for a number of years and also served as a department officer. Her connection the Elklets was of several years’ duration and she was noble dame of this organization. For several years she served at patroness of Alpha chapter of Westminster guild and she also had affiliation with Waterloo chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Gregory’s athletic ability won for her championship in golf at Iowa Falls Country club for several years and her leadership in this sport was maintained in this city, where she acted as golf instructor for the Y.W.C.A.
Bertha Long was born April 20, 1874, at Hazleton, Ia., and moved from that town to Waterloo when a young girl. She attended Waterloo Business college for a time, later entering Ellsworth college, Iowa Falls. She united with Iowa Falls Congregational church when 18 years old.
Married in 1893
Her marriage to F.W. Gregory took place at Iowa Falls May 1, 1895, and they resided in that city until 1905, when they moved to Waterloo. After coming to this city she united with First Presbyterian church.
Surviving are the husband, two sons, George W., age 21, and Franklin L., age 15; her mother, Mrs. L. E. Smith, and sisters, Mrs. Louis Blitch, Waterloo, and Mrs. F.C. Eastin, Greenfield, Mo., all of whom were here at the time of her death.
Funeral services will be conducted at First Presbyterian church at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Rev. J.R. Macartney officiating. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery. The body will rest at the O’Keefe & Towne mortuary until the hour of services.
