Tragedy struck near Tuscumbia Friday night when two young residents of the community were fatally injured in a collision of their two cars on Hwy. 52. The accident claimed the lives of John S. Hawk, 20, a concrete construction worker who lived south across the river from Tuscumbia, and Mary Christine (Christy) Graves, 16, a Tuscumbia High School student and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Graves, who was within a mile of her family home when the accident occurred.

The State Highway Patrol said the eastbound car driven by Mr. Hawk was on the wrong side of the road when it struck Miss Graves' approaching car nearly head-on. Both were alone in their cars. Scene of the 9:50 p.m. accident was about a mile west of Tuscumbia near the Ross Adcocks' home.

Mr. Hawk was pronounced dead at the scene by Billy F. Cochran, Miller County Coroner. Miss Graves was taken to Charles E. Still Hospital, Jefferson City, where she was pronounced dead of her injuries.

The accident occurred as she was returning home from the two basketball games at Tuscumbia High School where she had participated as a member of the girls' team and as a cheerleader for the boys' game. School was dismissed at Tuscumbia on Monday and flags in the town flew at half mast.

Christy was born March 3, 1961 at Humphreys Clinic in Tuscumbia, the daughter of Raymond and Mary (Warren) Graves who survive at the home on Hwy. 52 west of Tuscumbia. She lived most all of her life in Missouri except for summers spent in Alaska where her father was employed in construction work. Christy worked the past summer in Fairbanks, Alaska, as a swimming instructor, and the summers of 1975 and 1976 in Cordova, Alaska, where she also attended the first quarter of her freshman year of high school.

Christy was a junior at Tuscumbia High School where she was president of her class, played clarinet in the band, was a varsity cheerleader in 1976-77 and again in 1977-78, played girsl' varsity basketball and softball and was a member of the chorus. She had achieved the first quarter honor roll, just announced last week.

She had been a swimming instructor for the Miller County Red Cross and a lifeguard. Christy had been baptized In May, 1969, by the Rev. Calude Stevens at Aurora Springs, and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tuscumbia.

Graves, both of Tuscumbia; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Warren of Tuscumbia; two sisters-in-law, Archannett Graves and Marena Graves, and one niece, Mary Lynn. Her paternal grandparents, Walter and Oma Graves, preceded her in death.
