Biography

Hiram was born in August 1872 in Pennsylvania, the son of Alonzo and Catherine Ann (Lowry) Furman. Alonzo and Ann were born in Pennsylvania, as were all their parents. In 1900 they lived in Clarion Township, Strattanville borough, Clarion, Pennsylvania. The household included Alonzo, 64, b. Aug 1836, a millwright, who owned the family’s house with a mortgage, and who had been married for 41 years; his wife, Ann, 61, b. March 1839, who had had eight children, six of whom were living; their three adult children: Hiram C., 27, b. Aug 1872, an elevator man; Elizabeth, 23, a school teacher; and Cassius, 19, b. July 1880, a day laborer. All members of the household could read and write. [1]
