Jo LaDeanne Whitaker, devoted mother and grandmother, peacefully went into the loving arms of the Lord on January 18, 2014 at the blessed age of 86. A proud native of Kaufman County, Jo was born on January 28, 1927, to Grover Whitaker and Nellie Bartley Whitaker. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Arnell Thomas and husband Terry of Kaufman County; her 2 grandchildren; Tanya Roberts and husband Monty, and Teresa Grimes and husband Todd. Jo is also survived by her 5 great-grandchildren; Troy Roberts and wife Jenny, Sadie Roberts, Tory Grimes, Tera Grimes, and PFC Toby Grimes; and 3 great-great-grandchildren; Easton Roberts, Mason Roberts, and Abby Roberts. Through generations of her family, Jo was one of many babies that were born in the very ranch house she was raised in on the Whitaker farm and graduated from Mabank High School. As a child, she would raise and pull cotton, work the pasture, and drove a tractor and equipment. She was later married to her lifelong sweetheart, Afton, and after becoming a mother; Jo became a very dedicated rancher and established a true talent in the art of farming and building her own ranch. Jo had a deep love for all types of animals, especially birds, and absolutely loved her goats. People called her "The Bird Lady" because she raised birds and had a true talent for training bird dogs to hunting. She trained many different types of birds, but was exceptionally good at training quail, pheasant, and chucker birds. While visiting Texas A & M, she was a guest speaker that educated in the concept and techniques of how to be successful in raising birds. Jo was the proud owner and operator of the "Wild Wing Hunting Resort" of Kaufman County. You knew Jo by her blue jeans or her khakis and she always wore a bright smile. Aside from her love of farming and ranching, Jo enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and also professed her faith and devotion with her church, being a proud member of the Church of Christ of Kaufman. She was a very strict, disciplined, and hot tempered woman. She believed in honesty and was a woman of her word. Jo was a hard worker and very tenacious with every obstacle she endeavored. Although she was very stubborn, Jo was loved by everyone that knew her. She was strong and determined and most would genuinely refer to her as a "pioneer woman." Jo loved life, loved the Lord, and absolutely loved her family. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Afton O. Flowers. Visitation will be held at Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home Chapel, Monday, January 20, 2014, from 12:00 pm– 2:00 pm. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with Bro. Terry Thomas officiating and graveside will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery. Family have asked friends to join in the celebration of Jo's life and in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Medina Children's Home in Medina Texas.
