PARLEY FINCH, HUMBOLDT, DIES (1927) --
(Special Correspondence)
HUMBOLDT, Iowa. Feb. 17 - Parly Finch, former state legislator, pioneer attorney, former mayor here and [_edit_], died yesterday in Mercy Hospital in Fort Dodge after several weeks illness.

Funeral services for Mr. Finch will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. from the First Congregational church here.

Mr. Finch served in the house of representatives in the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth general assemblies and in the upper house in the twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth sessions of the Iowa Legislature. Mr. Finch was chairman of the house judiciary committee in 1896 and in 1897 he assisted with the code revision.

ADMITTED TO BAR IN 1871

The veteran politician, 82 years old at the time of his death, was born in Windham, PA., September 24, 1844. Raised on a farm, he gained an education in the common schools there, taught school later for a time, then read law under his brother, Ira Finch, and was admitted to the bar at Waterloo (Iowa) in 1871. He came to Humboldt in 1872.

A philosopher and financier as well as a politician. Mr Finch frequently used to say that he believed that any man could amass a comfortable fortune.
"The first rule to gain a fortune is economy," he would declare. "If a person spends all he makes he can never be prosperous. The second is industry. No matter how talented he may be, a lazy person cannot win."

Discussing the trend of the times on his last birthday, Mr Finch said: "Too many play days, too many autos, and too much gas, are the causes of the so-called hard times, not only in Iowa, but in the whole United States. With play the chief business of the American masses, one might be tempted to predict that in a few years the sports department will be about all that a newspaper will need."

Mr. Finch was a Mason. His wife died in 1882. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Mina Finch Housel, and two grandchildren. A number of business buildings here are monuments to his life.

- Died in Humboldt, Iowa, Mrs Delphine Finch, wife of Parley Finch, and daughter of William Wait. Already her death has been recorded, yet we cannot forgo the mournful pleasure of scattering from our hands, a few flowers over the bier of a cherished and personal friend. The deceased was born at the old homestead in Wait's Settlement, where she spent her childhood and youth up to the age of twenty-six, at which time she was married to Parley Finch, of Windham, soon after removing to Humboldt, Iowa, where Mr Finch engaged in the practice of law. During the thirteen years of her absence she had visited her aged father, mother, and other relations twice, spending several months at each visit. When the telegram announcing the sad news of her death was received, it caused the most profound sorrow and regret. Mrs. Finch possessed one of those refined, genial dispositions which won its way to the hearts of all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. As a daughter she was all that could be desired; before her marriage remaining with her parents, brightening home with her love and labor; as a wife and mother kind and affectionate, ever anxious for the best interest of both husband and children. To the mourning family circles and relatives, we tender the sincere expressions of our sorrow and tenderest sympathies, yet realizing that her loss is HIS infinite gain.
