Mary E. Teufel, 83, of 108 Ruth Lane, Jersey Shore, Pa., passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at the Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital in Norfolk, Va. In recent years, she had been a resident of ManorCare in Jersey Shore and Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital in Norfolk, Va.

She was born Sept. 24, 1928, in Jersey Shore, the daughter of Richard A. Edwards and the former Florence E. Beach. She was a 1946 graduate of the Jersey Shore Area High School and a 1950 graduate of West Chester State Teacher's College.

A retired educator, she was employed by the Jersey Shore Area School District as an elementary school teacher, primarily at the second grade level, for nearly 40 years. She found great joy in her students' progress and development and was a Pennsylvania State Teacher of the Year Finalist in 1982.

She was a life-long member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she expressed her passion for music as church pianist and also served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Education Honor Society and the Daughter's of the American Revolution, Fort Antes Chapter. She was also a past member of the Marguerite Carl Smith Scholarship Committee and the Jersey Shore Library Board.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of over 49 years, George W. Teufel; a son, George R. Teufel; and daughter-in-law, Helen A. Teufel.

She is survived by a son, Robert S. Teufel and his wife, Lynn, of Virginia Beach, Va.; five grandchildren, George L. Teufel and his wife, Dawn, of Virginia Beach; Benjamin R. Teufel and his wife, Kelsey, of New Brighton, Pa.; Kristen L. Teufel of New York, N.Y.; Sean A. Teufel and Adam R. Teufel, both of Virginia Beach; a great-grandson, George N. Teufel; and a daughter-in-law, Lori H. Teufel; as well as many other relatives and dear friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday, May 19, 2012, at 10 a.m., in the Trinity United Methodist Church, corner of Allegheny and Glover Streets, in Jersey Shore. Rev. Jerry Cline will officiate. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening, May 18, in the Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore. Burial will be in the Jersey Shore Cemetery.
