United States Navy Veteran of World War II, having served aboard the USS Hornet as a Firecontrolman First Class and the USS Iowa. He was on the USS Hornet when it was sunk in the Battle of Santa Cruz Island.

Harvey was predeceased by his bother, Derrick Sides; his sisters: Joyce Smith, Sadie Wynder and Shirley Bouque; and his granddaughter, Sasha Truesdale.
