Roy R. Reed, 69, Last Rites Were Held August 9

Funeral services for Roy Raymond Reed, 69, of Bedford, were held August 9 in

Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford conducted by Rev. Carl Cummings and Rev. Marcia Smith. Mr. Reed died August 6, 1980 in Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Roy R. [aymond] Reed, son of W. [illiam] R. [aymond] Reed and Maude King Reed, was born west of Blockton, Iowa August 18, 1910.

He grew to maturity on the farm in the Blockton area where he attended the public school and was graduated from the Blockton High School in 1931.

On March 8, 1935 he was united in marriage to Iola Devault at Saint Joseph,

Missouri. They lived in Blockton until they moved to Bedford in 1941. He was

employed by the Iowa State Highway Commission for 42 years.

He served his country during World War II with the Army Air Corps over seas in Guam.

He was transferred and lived in Adair, Iowa, for six years and then to Leon, Iowa, for four years where he was stationed as Rest Area Attendant, returning to Bedford, Iowa following his retirement six years ago.

They had spent the past six winters in Arizona and Texas and he enjoyed traveling and becoming acquainted with new friends. He enjoyed craftwork and was very creative in this work; and enjoyed teaching others this art.

Three children were born to bless their home and to share their love: Agatha, Billy and Ronnie.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Iola, of the home; the three children, Agatha Norton, Billy, Ronnie and their families; six grandchildren: Mark and Jason Norton, Kris and Kerri Reed; and Robin and Todd Reed; two sisters, Alma Lyons and Pauline Orth; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

He will be remembered as a kind and considerate loved one and will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Reed, Iola Fern DeVault - Graveside Services for Iola Reed, age 93 of Bedford who died Friday, March 3, 2006 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center were held Monday, March 6, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Visitation celebrating Iola's life was held Monday from 9:00 to 11:00 at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford where coffee and cookies were served along with the sharing of many memories. Memorials can be directed to the Bedford Ambulance Service. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Iola Fern Reed was the second child born to Carl and Eldora (Schradter) DeVault on September 8, 1912, in Blockton, Iowa. She grew up attending school in Blockton, graduating with the Class of 1929. After graduation she and a girlfriend went to Des Moines to find work. Both girls found work with a family needing a cook and housekeeper, however, they had 3 spoiled children, and the girls only lasted 3 days!

In the fall of 1929, she started college in Maryville, Missouri attending for two years, and graduating with a lifetime Teacher's Certificate. Her first year of teaching school was in Benton, Iowa and she was only 18 years old and received $90 a month, paying $20 a month for room and board.

She met Roy Raymond Reed and the couple was united in marriage on March 8, 1935, in St. Joseph, Missouri at a cousin's home. Roy and Iola made a home adjacent to Roy's parents. On June 14, 1936, a daughter Agatha June was born in Blockton, in a small house by the Platte River. Times were hard and when Agatha was 14 months old, they went west to seek better employment, returning in the fall to Bedford. Finding no work, they moved to Council Bluffs, and returned to Blockton where Billy Carl was born on October 30, 1938, and Ronnie Ray on October 10, 1940. In 1941, the family moved to Bedford with Roy working for the Iowa State Highway Department, developing the Rest Areas on the Interstates.
