Charles grew up in Humboldt and Dakota City, Iowa on a farm just north of Dakota City. He was the son of Charley Christensen and Mary Delphine Christensen. He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and soon married his college sweetheart at Fort Belvior, Virginia. Charles and his fine wife raised their three excellent children in Cedar Rapids where Charles and Esther were consistent members of the Congregational Church, supporters of the Cedar Rapids Symphony (now called Orchestra Iowa), and founding members of the local chapter of the Antique Automobile Club.
Though Charles was a college educated engineer, he never forgot the lessons learned on the farm in the wake of the depression, through the austerity of World War II, and followed by the sudden loss of his father when Charles was twelve. It seems he was always quite handy at revitalizing just about any old thing he laid his hands on. He was a voracious reader, but could often be found spending his free time on other projects of interest around the house. His 'low maintenance' flat top haircut was as easily recognizable as his deep and melodious bass voice. He claimed to read no music, yet he had a fantastic memory for the songs he had sung before. He could 'name that tune' with the best of them as long as the category was classical or polka music. His knowledge of automotive history was seldom challenged or bettered. His youthful experiences running the farm, and later, his job in engineering, made him an astute manager of people, of all levels who worked at Cedar Rapids Inc (Iowa Manufacturing) where he worked the bulk of his years.
Charles is still fondly remembered and dearly missed by family, friends, and just about anyone he ever met. Those who sang in the church choir with him still listen for his deep bass voice to set that firm foundation.
