Wellington Leader July 28, 1983

Samuel A. Combs, 61, of La Mesa, California, who was born and reared in Wellington, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 19, at his home in La Mesa.

Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Combs, he was a graduate of Wellington High School and held his master's degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

He was born August 31, 1921 in Wellington.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving 4 years with the U.S. Navy.

He was a senior engineer for 17 years with General Dynamics in San Diego, CA, and was one of the engineers to pioneer the space program.

In recent years, he had managed an apartment complex in La Mesa.

While attending Wellington High School, he worked as an apprentice for The Wellington Leader.

He is survived by a son, Michael Combs, and a daughter, Renetta Fite, both of La Mesa, CA; a grandson, Travis, also of La Mesa; and one sister, Mrs. Odell Holley of Farwell.

A brother, Herschel Combs, publisher of the Memphis Democrat, preceded him in death.
