Death: Dec. 31, 1924
The death of Joseph W. Wolverton, of North West street, well known Tipton county resident, occurred at the Methodist hospital at Indianapolis, shortly after five o'clock Wednesday evening and the sad news was received by relatives in this city. The Young ambulance was dispatched immediately to bring the remains to Tipton, arriving here last night. The death followed a second operation performed Monday morning at the hospital. Mr. Wolverton was taken to the hospital several weeks ago and an operation was performed in hope of relieving a trouble that had bothered him for sometime. The operation was an emergency one in relieving a bowel impaction. At that time conditions were found that would necessitate a second operation when he would regain his strength. His improvement was very slow and was discouraging most of the time because of complications. During the past week he had been making gains and the sick man was very anxious for the operation in hopes it would bring about a speedy recovery. Mr. Wolverton was the son of Jonathan and Clarinda (Barr) Wolverton and was born in July, 1856, being 68 years of age at death. (His father was first married to Clarinda Ann Barr on Nov. 22, 1855 and second married to Martha W. Barr on June 24, 1857.) Joseph was married to Miss Mary Jane Stewart on Jan. 9, 1878, and eight children were born to their union, all of whom survive, they being, Mrs. Harry Allen, Mrs. Henry Miller, and Mrs. Preston Day, of Tipton; Fred Wolverton and Mrs. Howard Harper, of Sharpsville; Mrs. Dell McCullough, of Ekin; Mrs. Jennie Foster, of Goldsmith; and Alonzo Wolverton, of Culver. Mrs. Wolverton died about eight years ago and six years ago in September, he was married to Mrs. Emma Banta, of Tipton, who survives him. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Martha Wooldridge of Sharpsville, and a brother, Wilbur Wolverton, of Kokomo.
