BURIAL IN THE SPRINGTIME

St. Louis, Mo., Special: There will bo no coffin, no funeral service, no burial cortege and no tokens of mourning for Mrs. Elizabeth Jessie Van Zandt, wealthy wife of Edwin G. Van Zandt, wealthy vice president of the Van Zandt Gas Appliance Company.

Van Zandt declined the offer of his friends to sit up with the body, and placed his wife's form on a couch in the bedroom where she had died. Then he went to bed in the same room and put out the light.

The funeral announcement stated that Mrs. Van Zandt's body will "lie in state to her many friends, 10 a.m. to to 10 p.m. Burial at Rochester, N. Y., May 8, 1912. Interment private."

To a reporter Van Znadt said that his wife's body, dressed in a white reception gown, would remain on the couch on the ride to Bellefontaine cemetery. There it will be placed in a receiving vault.

"I did not wish to bury my wife while the snow was on the ground," said the husband. "In May, when the grass is green and the birds are singing, the burial will take place in Rochester, in our family plot."

"I have accepted such flowers as friends have sent, but there is no black rag on my door. There will be no singing and no funeral. My wife and I did not believe in such things, and although some person may regard it unfavorable, I am doing what she desired, in trying to keep things as nearly as possible what they were while she was here with me."

Mrs. Van Zandt was 60 years old. She had suffered from intestinal trouble for years, and had been kept alive for five weeks by the use of oxygen. During that time Mr. Van Zandt remained with her almost constantly, not going to his place of business and rarely leaving the house.
